City of Akron Main Outfall Sewer Cap Rehabilitation Construction Management Services Akron, Ohio
The Challenges
H.R. Gray, an Anser Advisory Company, was selected by the City of Akron to provide construction management services for the Main Outfall Sewer Cap project. The project consisted of rehabilitating the existing main outfall sewer that was constructed in the late 1920’s. The sewer is 90” tall at its highest and 144” wide at its widest, the existed structure consisted of a reinforced concrete sewer base and a three ring brick arch cap. Due to the results from a previous test project approximately 7,795 feet of sewer were rehabilitated. Reconstruction of the existing sewer was achieved by constructing a reinforced pneumatically placed mortar cap, cast-in-place concrete beam and footing founded on auger cast piles, coating the entire length of rehabilitated sewer with non-epoxy sealer. The project is part of the Akron Waterways Renewed program; an EPA mandate, dictated by the Federal Consent Decree, which requires Akron to control Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) and update the City’s sewer infrastructure. The main outfall sewer crosses the Cuyahoga River before it reaches the Water Reclamation Facility. The sewer bridge consists of five spans at 50 feet intervals, constructed on wall type piers on piles. Bridge restoration included patching spalled concrete and crack epoxy injection, on both the concrete substructure and box culvert superstructure, per ODOT standards.
