The Challenges

H.R. Gray , an Anser Advisory Company, provided construction inspection services to the Northeast Ohio Regional Sewer District (NEORSD) for the Euclid Creek Tunnel Project, serving as part of NEORSD’s Project Team on the large-scale project with far-reaching impact to the community. The Euclid Creek Tunnel (ECT) is one of seven underground tunnels, part of Project Clean Lake, a 25-year capital improvement plan. The tunnel is approximately 18,070 LF with a storage capacity of approximately 70 million gallons. The storage tunnel was excavated and supported with a bolted, gasketed, one-pass, steel-fiber, reinforced, concrete segment lining. The construction was performed utilizing a Herrenknecht single-pass hard rock Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), which excavated a tunnel 27 feet in diameter while simultaneously segmentally-lining the tunnel to an internal diameter of 24 feet in one forward motion. The tunnel passes predominantly through Chagrin Shale at an approximate depth of 200 feet. In addition to the vertical shafts, other construction was performed as part of the contract, including over 5,000 LF of consolidation sewers.
