The Challenges

UC Merced sought to quickly and efficiently expand its existing campus to meet a large demand of growth from its existing and future students. The Board selected the very innovative P3 approach of an Availability Payment P3, which became the very first P3 in the US that included classrooms. Named Project 2020, it provides over 1M assignable-square-foot (ASF) of program expansion to the existing campus, and will accommodate 10,000 additional students, thereby doubling the campus facilities by the year 2020.

The mixed-used expansion facilities are designed and constructed to meet LEED Gold Certification. The additional program includes 420,000 ASF of academic program; 400,000 ASF of housing and student dining, including 1,700 built beds; 165,000 ASF of academic support facilities; 100,000 ASF of athletics and recreation buildings; over 400,000 square feet of athletic and recreation fields; and expansion of the existing central utilities plant to support the new facilities.
