The Challenges

The program for the 40,500 SF performing arts center and student commons project includes a 485-seat theater with state-of-the-art sound and lighting systems; music and drama classrooms; a college counseling center; and a communications/technology lab.  A two-story lobby space extends the entire length of the facility to the west and connects the major program areas of the building and doubles as a student commons during the school day.  The lobby provides for abundant natural daylighting and unrestricted views to the mountains from both levels of the building.

The building was designed to minimize energy usage by approximately 40% over similar baseline facilities.  Elements of the sustainable design approach included natural daylighting, enhanced exterior envelope features, lighting control systems, high-performance glazing and energy efficient mechanical systems.
